3rd & 4th Grade Class
"Growing Fruit of the Spirit" - We began our school year by talking about the fruit of the
Spirit, and how these fruits would be shown in our actions. We discussed
several examples. I placed some green and red paper apples where the
students had access to them. At nearly any time of the day, a child
can go over and retrieve an apple. On that apple, he or she writes
how he/she saw another classmate display the “Fruit of the Spirit”
"Fun With English" - “What is Chronological
order?” This was the beginning of a fun, practical application
of English. All items for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich were
there on the desk. “I’m going to pretend I’ve never made a peanut butter
and jelly sandwich before,” I said. “Now you need to help me, by
telling me step-by-step what to do.” Putting their brains together, they
did well until time to put the two sandwich halves together. Then came some laughs
as I purposely put the wrong sides down. After a few more messy mistakes, the
sandwich was assembled properly.
We then went through the same process, this time putting
the steps into complete sentences, which I wrote on the board. Step-by-step
we reviewed what we had done. Now it was their turn to put an experience
familiar to them, on paper, in chronological order. The topic?
“Brushing Your Teeth!” English can be fun.
